Listening Club: All that Jazz (Dido and Aeneazz)
Thursday 12 November 2026
6pm
Brighton Unitarian Church
Tickets: £10
Join Joanna MacGregor as she dives deeper into the music of our November concert, Dido and Anneazz.
An introduction to the musical world of Eric Vloeimans, one of Europe’s most celebrated jazz performers and composers. We’ll examine why early Baroque music – Purcell, Pachelbel and Rameau – combines so well with contemporary jazz, sharing similar techniques of ground bass, embrellishment and improvisation.
Join Joanna MacGregor as she reveals Eric Vloeimans’ new commission for BPO strings, jazz trumpet, piano and percussion, Innermission. We’ll all explore the background to Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and Eric Vloeiman’s vivid new arrangement for the 21st century.
Designed to illuminate and entertain, our new series The Listening Club delves deep into this season’s music, uncovering composers’ intentions, social context, and musical motifs to listen out for. Most importantly, we’ll have fun.
‘Thanks too for Joanna’s concise but cogent introductions. The enthusiasm of her live comments makes these performances that bit more special!’ – Andrew Connal
