News, behind-the-scenes content and ways to be involved as we celebrate our centenary year.
Our story is one of longevity. The orchestra has only had four Music Directors across its 100-year history, with almost half that time spent under the baton of founder Herbert Menges. Some of BPO’s players have performed with us for over 40 years. Some of our audiences saw those players join.
Its a story that includes names like Thomas Beecham, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten, who all served as President of the orchestra. It features legends of the day like Sergei Rachmaninoff, Yehudi Menuhin and Jacquelin Du Pré. And woven throughout is Brighton Dome, our home since 1928.
Fast-forward 100 years, and Joanna MacGregor’s leadership and enticing programming has seen audiences triple, bringing the orchestra securely into its blockbuster centenary season.
As we approach this milestone, we invite you to reflect on our history and join the celebrations as we move into the next 100 years (and beyond).
Join us for a blockbuster centenary season, opening with the explosive Rite of Spring and culminating in Messiaen's cosmic Turangalîla Symphony.
We'll be welcoming world-class soloists Evelyn Glennie, Jess Gillam, Cynthia Miller and more.
Did you watch our online concerts during the pandemic? Do you remember our Hove Town Hall concerts during Brighton Dome’s refurbishment? Perhaps you even attended a Herbert Menges concert before his death in 1972...?
Please send your BPO memories to mail@brightonphil.org.uk and help us tell this remarkable story.
